A 6-year-old autistic child was rescued after falling into the Mataruna River, in Araruama, in the Lakes Region of Rio, on Tuesday night (9). The boy was removed from the water by a stretcher bearer from the municipality's Pediatric Emergency Care Unit (UPA) and taken to medical care. According to City Hall, he was discharged and is doing well.
The rescue was carried out by Luiz Felipe Pita, who works as a stretcher bearer at the unit. He said he was on duty when a woman arrived at the scene asking for help and reporting that a child was drowning in the river.
"I got there and saw that the child was really drowning. I jumped into the river, crossed to where she was, took her out of the water and ran to the UPA", he reported.

Child received medical care and was discharged

The child was immediately taken to the health unit, where he received care in the emergency room.
According to the stretcher bearer, the mother informed that the boy is autistic and had left the house alone after managing to open the gate of the residence. The family lives close to the river.
Doctor Thamires Carvalho informed that the UPA team was mobilized as soon as they received information about the rescue.
"While the child was brought to the unit, the team was already prepared to receive him, with doctors, nurses, nursing technicians and physiotherapists", he explained.
According to the doctor, the boy responded well to the procedures performed and was discharged after evaluation.
In a statement, Araruama City Hall reported that agents from the Municipal Civil Guard also assisted in the incident and highlighted the quick action of the professionals involved in rescuing and caring for the child.
