The 19-year-old, who entered law school at the beginning of the year, has been hospitalized for nine days at Hospital da Restauração, in the Derby neighborhood, in the center of Recife.
"Marcela is a very good person. In a short time, she managed to captivate everyone here in our class [...]. She is quiet in her corner, but she is so smiling, so bright. Marcela was on the beach with family and friends when she was bitten by a tiger shark on the afternoon of June 1st. According to her cousin, the young woman was removed from the water without her right leg and was helped by a doctor from Minas Gerais, who was walking along the shore, before the firefighters arrived. The day before, an 11-year-old boy had also been attacked on Piedade beach (find out more below).
The young woman is enrolled in the first period class at the private university Uninassau, at the unit located in the Caxangá neighborhood, in the West Zone of the capital. According to Marcela's teachers and colleagues, the family ended up canceling the course, but went back on it, at the request of the young woman herself.
Professor Karina Fonseca explained that the student must return to her studies while still in the hospital, receiving special pedagogical support.
"Her tests will be carried out in the hospital environment. This pedagogical support, she is receiving from the institution. And she will continue. And we are waiting for her return next semester. [...] This shows her desire to continue, to live. And it is very important, including in her recovery. And she is getting a lot of support from her friends, from her college classmates. The group is all mobilized", he said.
In addition to the educational support, friends spread posters asking for blood donations for the young woman, contributing to her treatment. The group also got her a wheelchair and crutch and plans to help the young woman get a prosthetic.
"Always smiling"
Student Camila Ferreira, who is also part of Marcela's class, said it took her a while to believe when she heard about the shark attack.
"[The videos of the incident] showed her very vulnerable. We never saw Marcela like that. Marcela was always smiling in the college hallway. When we saw her like that, it was something very difficult", he described.
Camila also said that every day her colleagues contact her friend, who is hospitalized in the HR ward, by phone. According to the student, the young woman is always worried about her college subjects.
"We're always talking to her, we send photos of us studying. Yesterday there was a super difficult test and we sent a message: 'friend, we're studying' [...]. In fact, she, on those days, sent a message to the group talking about work, if I wanted to send her something. I said: 'friend, go and rest, please'", he said.
In the student's view, this daily contact has been fundamental to Marcela's recovery. "Bringing her into our daily lives, showing what is happening at college, is showing that she is also active, that she hasn't lost her rhythm, of studying with us", he stated.
