Cameraman who covered seven World Cups recalls his relationship with stars and coaches The joy of being at an edition of the World Cup is not just for the players and coaches. For many, working on covering the biggest football tournament on the planet is a dream come true. Retired film reporter José Carlos Cruz da Silva, known as Mosca, even dreamed of one day playing in the World Cup, before leaving Recife (PE) to work as a journalist in Campinas (SP). But, at 69 years old, he is proud to say that images from seven World Cups have passed through his camera lenses: Mexico, in 1986; Italy, in 1990; France, in 1998; South Korea and Japan, in 2002; Germany, in 2006; South Africa, in 2010; and Brazil, in 2014. "Just as the player is called up, the broadcaster has a list, right? Who's going, who's not going. So, when you see your name of who's going to the World Cup, it's an achievement," said Mosca. Although the list is extensive, the cameraman knows each star he met by heart: Pelé, Zico, Rivelino, Careca, Romário, Bebeto, Ronaldo, Kaká, Ronaldinho Gaúcho and, of course, Neymar. "I had a good relationship with many of them, chatting at the hotel. Then you were in the circle with the guys, chatting and sometimes even some information or other would come out, right? 'Come here, tomorrow, what's the team?' (...) Sometimes he helped me to give the source to the reporter", he said. ✅ Click here to follow the g1 Campinas channel on WhatsApp Fly with Neymar during coverage of the Brazilian team Personal file During coverage of the Olympic Games, Mosca managed to take a photo with Neymar, and the star asked to hold the film reporter's camera during the recording. The reception made the number 10 of Santos and the Brazilian team gain the admiration of Mosca, who sent a message to the player, called up by coach Carlo Ancelotti for this year's World Cup. "I'm rooting for him. Neymar, for me, the team is you and ten others. Get back on your feet, you'll be the man of the World Cup", he stated. From Felipão to Tite Film reporter from Campinas remembers behind the scenes of 7 World Cups The cameraman also cherishes all the coaches who have played for the Brazilian team since Telê Santana, in 1986. If off the field Felipão and Tite experienced episodes of fights, in Mosca's heart they occupy a place of affection together. In the case of Felipão, due to winning the fifth world championship in 2002, the film reporter worked on the coverage and keeps an autographed shirt. "I was in the fifth, man. It was such a thrill to be with the guys. It was a wonderful, united group. That's what you have to have today, in this World Cup", he commented. Mosca greeted Tite after the Brazilian team's game Personal file With Tite, there was a meeting during a match in the last World Cup held in Qatar, in 2022. From the stands, Mosca called the coach for a handshake after a match and was answered. "He was passing by the side of the field and the fans were shouting 'Tite, Tite, Tite'. Then I called 'Adenor', he looked and said: 'Stop, Mosca! Is that you, man? Just kidding'. I've known Tite since Guarani's time here", he said. Tite played for Guarani, in Campinas, between 1984 and 1988. On the eve of another edition of the World Cup, Mosca stated that, after many years, he will return to watching games at home. A rest after years of traveling the world capturing every emotion with a camera in hand. "Everything in life is an achievement. You do what you do to win tomorrow. And I won", he was moved.
