The woman who was injured received first aid from a team from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) and was then taken to a private hospital in Natal. According to her husband, who was driving the car, the woman was rescued conscious and was in stable health.
According to information from agents from the Municipal Urban Mobility Secretariat (STTU), one of the drivers was traveling along Rua Ênico Monteiro, while the other was traveling along Rua Ismael Pereira, when the collision occurred at the intersection.
The drivers of both vehicles remained at the scene of the accident awaiting assistance from authorities.
Residents and drivers fear intersection
Residents report that the intersection has a history of accidents and demand solutions.
"Practically every day there are accidents here on this corner. Every day. It's been 15 days since the car entered this condominium. The accident was so strong that the car knocked down the wall of the building", recalled social worker Regina Maria dos Santos, who has lived on Rua Ênico Monteiro for over 20 years.
The social worker believes that installing the signs on the stretch did not solve the problem.
"Here on this corner there is a record for accidents. Before the signage, there were a lot of accidents. And after the signage, they continued to occur. The signage, it seems, didn't solve the problem. What is needed here, I think is a sign, a traffic light to see if people obey", he said.
In a note, the Natal Urban Mobility Secretariat (STTU) informed that STTU informed that it will check whether the signage at the site remains in accordance with the original implementation project.
According to the ministry, what has frequently occurred on the stretch is "disrespect for traffic rules and existing signage". The agency also added that new studies will be carried out and that other road safety measures may be evaluated for the location.
"STTU's preliminary assessment points out that the main problem is not necessarily in the signage, but in the non-compliance with traffic rules by drivers", the ministry said in a note.
Until a new assessment is made, delivery driver Francis Raveli fears passing through the section.
"You have to go through it very carefully, slowly and there's still a risk. Even if you're all careful in the world, there's still a risk of something happening", he lamented.
Accident in May
A ride-hailing car climbed a sidewalk and knocked down part of a condominium wall after being hit by a pickup truck at the intersection on May 19 this year.
According to reports from witnesses and the driver of the app car, he was traveling along Rua Énico Monteiro, towards Nova Parnamirim, when he was hit by a silver Ranger truck that was traveling along Rua Ismael Pereira.
Despite the scare, no one was seriously injured.
