A 44-year-old public servant died last Wednesday (4), four days after being run over on Avenida Capitão João, in the central region of Mauá, in Greater São Paulo. Priscila Meneses Cabral was buried this Sunday (7), in Ribeirão Pires.
Friends and family are demanding justice, the identification of the driver who fled the scene and an investigation into the suspicion that he was involved in a race at the time of the accident (see below).
According to the police report registered with the 1st Police District of Mauá, the collision occurred at around 3:04 am on May 31, at number 1,031 on the avenue.
Priscila's boyfriend reported that the couple had left a bar and were getting ready to leave when they realized that the car battery didn't work.
He states that he walked away for a few moments to ask for help from people who could push the vehicle, while Priscila waited at the scene. Shortly after, he heard a bang. When he turned his attention to the avenue, he saw his companion lying after being run over.
Military police officers who responded to the incident found two damaged vehicles at the scene, including the car that hit Priscila. However, residents reported that a third vehicle, a blue BMW, was also involved in the accident.
According to these witnesses, the BMW driver was traveling at high speed and left the scene without providing assistance.
Also according to the incident report, the driver of the car that ran over the public employee stated that he was heading in the direction of the city center when he was overtaken by the BMW, which allegedly entered the wrong lane at high speed.
He said he tried to brake, but lost control of the steering, hitting Priscila and another vehicle. He highlighted that he was the one who called a Rescue unit.
After remaining hospitalized for four days with leg fractures and head trauma, Priscila succumbed to her injuries and died on Wednesday (4). She left two daughters, aged 11 and 20. The wake was held on Saturday (6), and the burial took place this Sunday (7).
Request for Justice
To g1, family and friends said they hope that the circumstances of the collision are clarified and that everyone involved is identified and held responsible.
With this objective, a campaign with the phrase "Justice for Pri" began to be disseminated on social media.
"It wasn't an accident. It was recklessness. Priscila was run over in the early hours of Sunday, on Avenida Capitão João, in Mauá, by an irresponsible man racing. We want justice. He cannot go unpunished. Her life was interrupted. Our family's pain is immense, but our voice will be stronger", says one of the campaign materials.
Witnesses interviewed by the family claim that the driver of the BMW and the driver of the vehicle that hit Priscila were involved in a race at the time of the accident. The information, however, is still investigated by the Civil Police.
"She was a happy person, loved by everyone who knew her. We are asking for justice. We need the person responsible to be identified and arrested. If there really was a rift, for everyone involved to be found and held accountable", said a friend of the victim, who preferred not to be identified.
