Qlayaat Airport was established by the French army as an airstrip in the 1930s. It was used for civilian purposes in the 1960s, and domestic flights were operated to it during a short period during the civil war (1975-1990). The airport was subjected to Israeli bombing during a previous war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006.
