A case was reported of a teenager who developed quadriplegia after lightly stretching while studying and hearing a popping sound in his neck. The researchers emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, saying that the possibility of spinal cord infarction should be considered when sudden neurological abnormalities appear even in young patients. The international medical journal Cureus published ‘Spinal cord infarction in a young patient that occurred after simple stretching movements: a case report on rare causes and difficulties in diagnosis’ on the 13th (local time). According to the report, a 17-year-old male student from Malaysia stretched both arms upward to relax while studying at his desk. At this moment, he heard a ‘popping’ sound in the back of his neck, and immediately symptoms of weakness and numbness in both arms appeared. The patient’s symptoms rapidly worsened within a few hours. As the decline in muscle strength extended to both legs, he eventually became unable to walk on his own. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed about 24 hours after the onset of symptoms showed that there were lesions along the front of the spinal cord from the 5th cervical vertebra to the 3rd thoracic vertebra.
