A court ruling was made that the ownership of the late video art artist Nam June Paik’s ‘My Faust – Economics’ and ‘My Faust – Soulfulness’ belongs to Jeong Hee-ja, the spouse of the late Daewoo Group Chairman Kim Woo-jung. According to the legal community on the 18th, the Seoul Central District Court’s Civil Settlement Division 34 (Presiding Judge Kim Chang-mo) ruled on the 10th that Ms. Jeong filed a movable extradition claim against Wooyang Industrial Development (formerly Daewoo Development). In the lawsuit, some of the plaintiffs were ruled in favor. Ms. Jeong filed this lawsuit against Wooyang Industrial Development, requesting the return of 188 works of art owned by the Wooyang Art Museum. The court recognized Ms. Jeong's ownership of only three works, including two works by Nam June Paik and a work by German artist Sigmar Polke, and ordered the return. Ms. Jeong owned the Gyeongju Hilton Hotel and the Art Sonjae Museum (now Art Sonjae Museum) of Wooyang Industrial Development, which her husband controlled, around 1991. He filed a lawsuit in July of last year, claiming that he stored the art he owned at the Wooyang Museum of Art, but it was not returned during the transfer of management rights to the company. The court ruled that Nam June Paik's works were based on the statements of the gallery representative and museum curator who sold the works, and account remittance details.
