President Lee Jae-myung positively evaluated the government's progress in medical reform. Minister of Health and Welfare Jeong Eun-kyung explained that she decided to expand the number of medical school students through sufficient communication based on the lessons learned from past legislative conflicts. In a Ministry of Health and Welfare work report held at the Blue House guesthouse on the 16th, President Lee asked Minister Jeong, “Is medical reform progressing well without any problems?” Minister Jeong replied, “Currently, we are creating regional, essential, and public medical reform plans and promoting them one by one for each field.” The government increased the number of medical school students on average per year. We plan to increase the number of people by 688 over 5 years and then reevaluate the supply and demand situation of medical personnel. All of the increased manpower will be selected through the local doctor system and be required to serve compulsorily in the region for a certain period of time. Minister Jeong said, “A new law called the regional doctor system has been introduced, and all of the increased manpower will be required to serve under the regional doctor system.” When President Lee asked, “Is this something agreed upon with the medical community?”, Minister Jeong explained, “The Health and Medical Policy Deliberation Committee agreed, and we communicated and decided based on estimates.” President Lee said, “It is a medical reform issue.”
