The government and Samsung Electronics are advancing the start-up of the first of six semiconductor fabs to be built in the Yongin National Industrial Complex in Gyeonggi Province to 2029, two years earlier than originally planned. The strategy is to solidify leadership in the global memory semiconductor supply chain competition by speeding up the construction of the Yongin National Industrial Complex. According to the semiconductor industry on the 12th, at the ‘Mega Project Public-Private Joint Inspection Meeting’ chaired by the President on the 6th, a plan to adjust Samsung Electronics’ first fab operation target in the Yongin National Industrial Complex from 2031 to 2029 was discussed intensively. As the demand for memory semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) is soaring and competition among global companies to expand capacity is intensifying, the public and private sectors agree that domestic semiconductor production capacity must be urgently expanded. The recent decision to invest in large-scale semiconductors also served as an opportunity. In a situation where Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do decided to invest a total of 800 trillion won to build 4 high-tech memory fabs (2 each), the first confirmed Yongin National Industrial Complex was established.
