Korean bassist Yoo Seung-ho (25) took second place at the ‘2nd Sumi Jo International Vocal Competition’ held in France. Yoo Seung-ho took second place after American baritone Trevor Haumschild-Rocha (27), who won the final of the Sumi Jo Sung Competition held at Château de La Perte-Imbaud in the Loire region, France, on the 10th (local time). Romanian soprano Paula Iancic (32) took third place. Winners were also awarded prize money of 50,000 euros (about 85.8 million won) for first place, 20,000 euros for second place, and 10,000 euros for third place. Chinese mezzo-soprano Fei Sun (24) and Ukrainian vocalist Evelina Lyubonko (29) received a special award from Hyundai Motor Company, which sponsors the competition. Yu, who graduated first from Gyeongbuk Arts High School, is currently a fourth-year student at Seoul National University's vocal music department. This was his first attempt at an international competition, and he said, “I was satisfied with reaching the finals, and I am happy to get a good result.” He added, “It doesn’t feel real yet, but I want to express my gratitude to my parents.” Haumschild-Rocha, the winner, said, “I can’t express in words how thrilling and fantastic it is.”
