North Korean Workers' Party General Secretary Kim Jong-un held a joint meeting of the party, government, and military to disclose the corrupt practices of Park Hee-chul, former deputy director of the Organization of the People's Army's General Political Bureau, and his close associates, and punish them. Former Deputy Director Park is accused of abusing his organizational and personnel rights to receive bribes and assign his close associates to key positions over the past four years. Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea's Workers' Party, reported on the 11th that at the party, government, and military joint meeting held in Pyongyang the day before, there was a notification of materials exposing the extra-large corruption of former Deputy Director Park and his followers. The General Political Bureau is a key institution that oversees party organizations and ideological and political projects within the North Korean military. It monitors and supervises whether the party's line and policies are properly implemented in the military through political committee members and political leaders dispatched to units at each level. As he is in charge of organization, personnel, and ideological control, he exerts tremendous influence within the military. Former Deputy Director Park is a key executive in charge of organization and personnel at the General Political Bureau. It is unusual for North Korea to disclose in detail the allegations of corruption of high-ranking executives of key military and political institutions and even reveal the punishment through a meeting.
