The average price of rice sold at supermarkets across the country during the week ending July 5 was 3,458 yen including tax per 5 kg, falling below 3,500 yen for the first time in about a year and a half. As rice inventories remain at levels higher than usual, retailers and wholesalers are moving to lower prices.
