Controversy is rising as lawmakers of the Democratic Party of Korea are pushing to revise the Labor Standards Act to allow part of workers' wages, including performance bonuses, to be paid in local currency such as local love gift certificates. Although the bill is premised on ‘workers’ consent,’ it is criticized as a regressive bill that undermines the principle of payment of wages in currency and limits workers’ right to dispose of wages. The labor community cited the Democratic Party’s reason for revision as ‘revitalization of the local economy’ as a reason for workers’ wages.
