Baejae High School, which sparked controversy for disparaging the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement by shouting the cheering slogan “I have to go to Starbucks” during a high school baseball tournament, has officially apologized. The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education is considering an investigation into Baejae High School. Baejae High School posted an apology on the school's website on the 29th, saying, "We sincerely apologize for causing deep hurt and disappointment to many people, including Gwangju Jeil High School athletes, parents, alumni, and citizens of Gwangju, due to inappropriate cheering slogans by some student athletes." The controversy arose during the game between Baejae High School and Gwangju Jeil High School at the 81st Blue Dragon National High School Baseball Championship held at Mokdong Baseball Stadium in Seoul on this day. At that time, some players from Baejae High School chanted “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go to Starbucks” towards the opposing dugout during the game. This was criticized as a slogan reminiscent of the Starbucks Korea event, which recently sparked controversy for distorting and disparaging the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. Previously, Starbucks held a tumbler sales event on the 18th of last month and used phrases such as ‘Tank Day’ and ‘Desk Tak’ to commemorate the May 18th Min.
