Haaland scores twice and Norway scores on their return to the World Cup
Norway returned to compete in the World Cup after 28 years and debuted with a 4-1 victory over Iraq, which returned to the tournament after four decades.
The highlight of the match was Erling Haaland. One of the main strikers in world football scored twice in the first half and led the Norwegian rout.
Haaland opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Iraq equalized ten minutes later with Aymen Hussein, a striker who drew attention after facing immigration difficulties to enter the United States before the tournament.
Equality was short-lived. In the 42nd minute, Haaland scored again and became the first Norwegian player to score two goals in the same World Cup match.
In the second half, Ostigard expanded after an assist from Odegaard. In stoppage time, Aymen Hussein scored an own goal when trying to cut off a move started by Haaland, closing the score at 4-1.
Austria wins in the return to the World Cup
Another team that ended a long wait was Austria. Back in the World Cup after 28 years, the Austrians defeated Jordan 3-1.
Schmid opened the scoring in the first half. Shortly after the break, Olwan equalized for the Jordanians through a goal dedicated to Yazan Al-Naimat.
Austria regained the lead in the 30th minute of the final stage, with an own goal from Al Arab. In stoppage time, VAR awarded a penalty for a handball by defender Obaid.
Arnautovic converted the shot and made history by becoming the oldest Austrian player to score in a World Cup, at 37 years old.
