Through the Zoonosis Surveillance Unit (UVZ), blood collection and microchipping in dogs for the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis in Jardim Eldorado are scheduled for this Wednesday (17th). The service will be on Rua Antônio Lopes Filho, in front of Praça da Academia da Terceira Age, from 8:30 am to 11 am and from 2 pm to 4 pm. The same action will be repeated on June 24th, at the same times and location. In addition to the diagnostic actions, UVZ intensified the environmental guidance and management work in the Jardim Balneário and Residencial Cervantes neighborhoods, starting with home visits to guide residents about the disease and the measures necessary to eliminate breeding sites for the sandfly, which transmits leishmaniasis. According to the city hall, approximately 300 properties will be visited. A collection shift is also scheduled on July 4th, from 10am to 3pm, in the courtyard of the Santo Expedito Church, located on Rua Victório Andreasi Netto, in Residencial Cervantes II. According to the Ministry of Health, visceral leishmaniasis is a chronic zoonosis, with systemic involvement and, if untreated, can lead to death in up to 90% of cases. The recommendation is to see a doctor as soon as the first symptoms appear. Once diagnosed, the sooner treatment is started, the greater the chances of avoiding worsening and complications of the disease. Among the symptoms in humans are: long-lasting fever. enlarged liver and spleen; weight loss; weakness; reduced muscle strength; anemia. Transmission of leishmaniasis is carried out by the straw mosquito Disclosure Disease transmission In 2025, there were 87 cases of canine visceral leishmaniasis and three cases in humans in Presidente Prudente, according to data from Zoonoses. So far this year, 117 canine cases and this first human case have been recorded. Leishmaniasis is not transmitted directly from dogs to people. Transmission occurs through the bite of an infected female sandfly. Therefore, keeping the yard clean is one of the main forms of prevention. Guidelines: Avoid the accumulation of dry leaves: pruning remains, branches, animal feces, organic waste, debris and materials stored in humid and shady places; Use of specific repellent collars for leishmaniasis: which help reduce dogs' contact with the transmitting mosquito. Collars can be found in pet stores in the city. Those responsible should also be aware of the symptoms of the disease in dogs, which may include: weight loss; skin wounds that are difficult to heal; hair loss; excessive nail growth; loss of appetite; nosebleeds and eye problems. However, some animals may not show symptoms, which makes periodic examinations even more important for early diagnosis of the disease, according to the city council of Presidente Prudente.
