A nickname echoed around the world this Monday (15): Little Voice. The Cape Verde goalkeeper is one of those football players who, in times when many insist on playing with their first and last name, still goes on the field using a curious nickname.
Vozinha's perfect performance prevented Spain – second in the FIFA rankings – from opening the scoring and held on to a 0-0 draw in the match in Atlanta, United States, and multiplied its fame in just 90 minutes.

Josimar José Évora Dias was born in the city of Mindelo, in the Cape Verde archipelago, on June 3, 1986, a period in which Mexico was hosting the World Cup.
Natural, then, for the football fanatic father, that the newborn would have the name of a player from that world cup. The father wanted to play Valdano, an Argentine striker. The Cape Verde registry authorities did not allow it. Hence, the second option was to name it Josimar, in honor of the Brazilian right-back in that World Cup.
On the island of São Vicente, in Cape Verde, he took no offense at home. Playing ball, he hated conceding goals and would return home angry if he lost a single goal. His friends didn't forgive him, they started saying that Josimar was going to complain to his grandparents - since he was raised by them. Thus, she became Voice. An annoying nickname when I was a child, but it quickly caught on on the island.

He started playing for local teams, such as Batuque and Mindelense, under the name Josimar. But then he went to play in Angola, at Progresso Sambizanga and there was already a goalkeeper with the same name. Between becoming Josimar Segundo or officially adopting Vozinha, the second option prevailed.
At 40 years old, when many have already hung up their gloves, Vozinha continues to perform at a high level. He has played for teams in Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia and is now at Chaves, in the 2nd Division of Portugal. He has been a goalkeeper for the Cape Verde national team since 2012, has participated four times in the African Cup of Nations and has already played 90 games with the number 1 shirt.
Vozinha has some connections with Brazil: a brother who lives in Recife, likes soap operas, music and Brazilian penta stars. Lucinha Nobre, a prominent flag bearer in the Rio carnival and great-granddaughter of a Cape Verdean, is a friend of the goalkeeper. She has already been to the Cape Verde archipelago six times to participate in the so-called Summer Carnival, which takes place in the goalkeeper's hometown.
"Vozinha is a legend in Cape Verde. He's from Mindelo, his family is from there. I'm pleased to be friends with him. He was in Portugal and prepared for the World Cup. He's a big highlight. I'm happy that today people have the opportunity to meet him. He has a heavy hand" – he has fun telling about his friend.
Cape Verdean Lourença Brites dos Santos, who lives in Rio de Janeiro, has no doubts, “Vozinha is much better than Allison!” – she declared, euphorically, even before the referee’s final whistle.
As he left the field in Atlanta, carrying the trophy for best player on the field, Vozinha told reporters that he had dreamed of this moment his entire life. The goalkeeper already knows that when he returns to the archipelago he will be revered by all 530,000 of his compatriots and that, definitely, the controversial nickname will be immortalized in the history of the World Cup.
In a World Cup where everyone wants to see Mbappé, Messi, Vinícius Júnior, Vozinha became a global celebrity and reached 7 million followers on social media shortly after the match. Now, the expectation is what the next performance of the Cape Verdean “paredão” will be like, against Uruguay, on June 21st, at 7 pm (Brasília time).
