Violence against elderly people in Rio de Janeiro increased from 2,386 cases in 2024 to 2,967 in 2025, an increase of 24%. The data appears in the panel “Scenario of Violence against Elderly Persons”, presented by the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) to mark the World Day to Combat Violence against Elderly Persons.
The data was released by the Operational Support Center of the Public Prosecutor's Office for the Elderly (CAO) this Monday (15). The Attorney General of Justice, Antônio José Campos Moreira, highlighted the institutional commitment to protecting the state's elderly population.

"We need to raise awareness in society about the importance of respecting the rights of elderly people, just as it is also necessary to encourage public authorities to provide dignified care to this part of the population, with the availability of a structured support network, with appropriate equipment. Violence is not only physical, but occurs through fraud and, increasingly, cybercrime", he stated.
The data shows that, in 2025, 2,816 people were victims of violence, the vast majority of them being women, with 2,002 records. Violence is mostly practiced at home, with 2,154 cases reported, with negligence, when elderly people suffer from a lack of attention and care, identified as the biggest villain, with 29% of cases.
"Unfortunately, we also observe an invisibility of most cases of violence, which leads to underreporting. The role of the State is fundamental so that we can efficiently combat this situation, since many families do not have the financial conditions or support network to provide the necessary care."
According to the CAO coordinator, Luiz Cláudio Carvalho, “the loss of independence and autonomy is directly related to the increase in cases of abandonment and negligence identified by the MP”, he assessed.
Report
The population can report cases of violence against elderly people to the MPRJ by calling 127 and other official Ombudsman channels. Contact can also be made by calling 100 (Dial 100), the federal government's channel for receiving reports of human rights violations.
