Disclosure/PCERJ
In an action with the PM, the Civil Police dismantled, this Monday (15), a clandestine cryptocurrency mining center that operated with stolen energy in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense.
According to police, agents located a warehouse used exclusively for mining cryptocurrencies. At the site, 123 pieces of Antminer S19 95T equipment were seized, as well as transformers, industrial exhaust fans, high-power circuit breakers, computers and other devices used in the activity.
🔎 Cryptocurrency mining requires adapted high-performance computers and practically exclusive dedication to perform billions of calculations per second. The machine that is faster in this processing wins a “reward” from the crypto asset itself.
According to the corporation, the operation was carried out by agents from the 59th DP (Duque de Caxias), the 60th DP (Campos Elíseos), the 66th DP (Piabetá) and the Reserved Service of the 15th BPM, after intelligence work and field investigations.

According to the Civil Police, the structure operated remotely, with a camera monitoring system and remote control. During the searches, agents also found documents and civil identities that, according to investigators, may be related to the operation of the enterprise.
The corporation reported that the seized equipment has an estimated market value of between R$400,000 and R$650,000. According to a preliminary police survey, the structure could generate gross monthly revenue of between R$50,000 and R$70,000, depending on the conditions of the cryptocurrency market.
Investigations indicate that the operation was supplied by a clandestine electricity connection. According to the Civil Police, irregular consumption operated continuously, 24 hours a day, causing an estimated loss of between R$250,000 and R$350,000 per month to the energy concessionaire.
During the same action, the agents also identified a company in the plastics manufacturing sector that, according to the police, also used a clandestine connection to supply its activities.
According to the Civil Police, the financial impact of the operation for the group under investigation is estimated at around R$885,000. The value, according to the corporation, may be reviewed after the completion of technical expertise and asset analyses.
Investigations continue to identify everyone involved and determine whether criminal organizations are involved in exploiting the activity and in fraud related to the supply of electricity.
In May, the Civil Police found another cryptocurrency mining "farm", in Lins, North Zone of the capital.
