The first game of the day was between Switzerland and Qatar in Santa Clara, California. Even though they were widely favourites, Switzerland were unable to hold on to their minimal advantage and conceded a draw in the final minutes of the game, already in stoppage time. That 1-1 guaranteed Qatar's first point in a World Cup. Group B is in a mess, with all teams – Canada, Bosnia, Qatar and Switzerland – having gained one point. Switzerland wastes chances and Qatar draws at the end in Group B. Next was Brazil's debut, in New Jersey. It was the first world champion country to play in this World Cup. But the performance was far from a team favorite for the title. Morocco took the lead 20 minutes into the first half, through Ismael Saibari. Even though they played poorly, Brazil managed to draw thanks to a great individual play by Vinícius Júnior. When they finally found the spaces they wanted, in the second half, the Brazilian team was unable to take advantage. Fatigue seemed to weigh down the legs of Brazilians and Moroccans. In the final minutes, the African team seemed satisfied with the 1-1 draw. Brazil regretted not having won the three points. In the group's other match, Scotland beat Haiti 1-0 in Boston. John McGinn scored the winning goal, but it didn't come easy. The Scots had to withstand Haitian pressure to guarantee the provisional leadership of group C. In the last game of the day, held in Vancouver, Canada, Australia beat Turkey 2-0. It was already dawn in Brazil when the teams took the field, but the sun was still shining on the Canadian west coast. Irankunda and Metcalfe scored the goals of the game. Australia is second in group D, behind the United States on goal difference. Using the same criteria, Turkey is in third place and Paraguay in fourth place.
