Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, killed after being thrown into a rope jump without a rope Reproduction/Instagram How did the accident happen? A video circulating on social media shows Maria Eduarda being carried by three employees to the edge of the platform. She is propelled forward and, shortly after the fall, screams of despair are heard saying "the rope" and "people, the rope". The young woman fell from a height of 40 meters and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Samu and Fire Department teams. According to the Civil Police, the thick equipment that should have been attached to the victim's body to arrest the fall was forgotten and remained rolled up on the floor of the jump structure. A witness, who would jump right after the young woman, reported that the instructors did not carry out a safety check when Maria Eduarda was there. What is rope jumping? Rope jumping is an extreme sport in which the practitioner jumps from high places, such as bridges and viaducts, attached to a system of ropes similar to climbing. Unlike bungee jumping, which uses an elastic rope and makes the person "bounce", rope jumping stops the fall in a controlled way and makes the practitioner swing from one side to the other, like a human pendulum. As it is an extreme risk activity, professional companies adopt strict protocols, such as double checking, where more than one instructor confirms that all equipment is secured before authorizing the fall. Who was responsible for the jump? The men who appear in the video pushing the young woman wore t-shirts from the brands "Entre Cordas" and "Ih Voei". According to the police, the names are informal groups of practitioners, and there are no official companies behind the operation. They were a group of sports enthusiasts who met and, about a year ago, started promoting events in various destinations. In total, three men were charged with homicide with possible intent, when the risk of killing is assumed: Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32 years old; Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves, 27 years old; and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42 years old. Why wasn't the rope attached to the young woman when she jumped? According to witnesses and the Civil Police, there was a serious failure in checking the equipment and the instructors simply forgot to connect the security system in Maria Eduarda. A customer who would jump shortly thereafter reported that employees ignored the standard conference when it was her turn. The thick rope that was supposed to catch the young woman's fall remained tangled up on the floor of the platform. In a statement to the police, the three arrested instructors were unable to explain the reason for the error. The delegate responsible for the case stated that they appeared bewildered and claimed not to remember who was responsible for placing the rope, nor why the final inspection had not been carried out before pushing the victim. Death of young man in rope jump without rope: three men will be investigated for homicide with possible intent Reproduction Did the group have authorization to operate there? The police reported that the group did not have any type of authorization to perform jumps in the Skeleton Bridge region. Even without legal permission to use the space, the activity organized by them that Saturday brought together around 100 participants. What crimes are being investigated and the next steps in the investigation? The three were arrested in the act and will be investigated by the Civil Police for homicide with possible intent — which is when the person does not have direct intention, but takes the risk of killing. For the case delegate, by not checking the rope, they took the risk of producing a tragic result. The police will now hear other witnesses and await the conclusion of the expert reports. As the investigation progresses, the instructors could be formally reported to court and face criminal charges for the young woman's death. What is the position of the arrested instructors? The defense lawyer stated that the three clients are passionate about the sport, have been playing for years and have never had any problems. He classified the case as a "sad fatality". Who is responsible for the site? The Skeleton Bridge, where the tragedy occurred, is the responsibility of the Federal Government. In a statement, the Secretariat of Union Heritage (SPU) said it was "available to the authorities to collaborate in the investigations". According to the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services, the site is part of the real estate of the extinct Federal Railway Network (RFFSA) and was classified as a non-operational asset under the responsibility of the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT). "The Esqueleto bridge belonged to a non-implemented section of the RFFSA branch between Limeira and Cordeirópolis, within private properties. The asset transfer to the São Paulo SPU superintendency was completed in March 2026", he detailed, in a note. Limeira City Hall informed that it will sue the Union for failure to act. The municipal administration claims that it had already sent letters to federal agencies demanding security, maintenance and access control measures for the area, which presents known risks for years, but no action was taken.
