Swiss voters go to the polls this Sunday (14) to decide whether the country will be the first in the world to place a limit on the size of its population in the Constitution.
The referendum proposed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party proposes limiting the Swiss population to 10 million inhabitants. Currently, 9.1 million people live in the country, of which around 30% are Swiss residents born abroad.
If approved, the proposal obliges the government to take measures as soon as the population reaches 9.5 million -- for example, tightening rules for asylum for foreigners. If the country exceeds 10 million inhabitants, it will have to be even more strict and may even cancel the agreement on free movement of people signed with the European Union.

Like many European countries, Switzerland is experiencing an aging population and low birth rate. Analysts estimate that immigration is an important source of growth in the workforce and tax revenue.
Opinion polls show that the result should be close. The most recent of them, published by SRG, showed that "no" has 52% of preferences; those in favor of the proposal total 45%.
Voting is part of the direct democracy system in Switzerland, which allows changing the Constitution with referendums.
