How a trailer accident in Bahia boosted a forró singer’s career
The butterfly effect is a concept that illustrates how seemingly insignificant actions can trigger gigantic consequences. In the 1990s, the then worker at the Bahia Petrochemical Complex, Adelmário Coelho, was a witness to the theory: his songs started playing on the radio after his CDs were looted in a truck accident.

Born in the Barro Vermelho district, in Curaçá, in the north of Bahia, Adelmário moved to Salvador in the 1970s. In love with northeastern music, he started going to the Uauá restaurant, in the Itapuã neighborhood, where the forró nights were very lively.
"I worked at the Polo, I had a very good salary and I didn't plan anything in relation to my artistic career. Every now and then, I would have a snack at the restaurant, while I enjoyed the weekend."
In 1994, with a trip to Caruaru, a city in the interior of Pernambuco well known for São João, the opportunity arose for Adelmário to record a composition. The idea was to return to Salvador with the recording and show it to friends.
The studio owner liked Adelmário's voice, gave him another nine songs to record and the Bahian returned home with an LP that pleased not only his friends, but also some radio stations in Salvador.
The following year, he returned to the studio with a more original project and recorded a CD. One of the songs was “Não Fale Mal do Meu País”, by João Caetano, which became his first big hit.

At a time when there were no social networks, much less streaming, the recording was sent to São Paulo and 3 thousand copies were ordered. Adelmário's goal was to receive the CDs before São João, but fate didn't want it that way.
"Arriving close to Porto Seguro, the truck overturned and all the cargo was looted, including my 3,000 CDs."
"I spent days waiting for the CDs to arrive. When I found out that the shipment had been looted, I was sad, I was very excited. I had to ask them to make more copies, which took a long time."
But it was in the (until then) tragedy that the butterfly effect happened: some copies arrived in the hands of a lady who really liked FM Porto Seguro and decided to give them to the announcer. He started playing “Não Fale Mal do Meu País” and giving away copies to listeners.
"I started doing raffles and people started liking it. I think I was the first to play Adelmário's songs here in the region", recalled announcer Charles.
At home, Adelmário's phone started ringing and several invitations to shows appeared. In parallel to this, the CD became popular with piracy and spread through street vendors throughout Brazil.

Despite his success, the Bahian continued working at the Petrochemical Complex for a few more years and only dedicated himself fully to music after retiring. His career has spanned 30 years, touring Brazil with his songs.
"Forró has always been my passion, my musical identity. I do it for love, I do it in its defense, I consider my audience sacred", he stated.
