Assembly Ethics Council approves impeachment of deputy Renato Freitas, from PT
Judge Rogério Luis Nielsen Kanayama, from the Court of Justice of Paraná, granted an injunction to suspend the vote in the plenary of the Legislative Assembly of Paraná (Alep) on the impeachment process of deputy Renato Freitas (PT). The vote was scheduled for next Tuesday (16).
The Legislative Assembly was notified of the injunction on Friday afternoon (13). The president of the Assembly, Alexandre Curi (PSD), said he will appeal the decision.
When judging an appeal presented by Renato Freitas, the judge understood that the vote in plenary, if it confirmed the revocation of the mandate, would have "immediate consequences that are difficult to reversible". This is because it would determine the deputy's ineligibility in an election year. In this way, the judge understood that, if the punishment were reversed in court in the future, the damage caused by preventing Freitas from running for a new public position could not be easily undone or repaired.

Therefore, the judge suspended the progress of the ethical-disciplinary process until the final judgment of the action brought by the deputy to question the legality of the process. In the action, Renato Freitas states that the deadline for applying the punishment would not have been respected and points to the restriction of defense, limitation of the production of evidence, suspicion of the case's rapporteur and restrictions on the right to appeal.
The judge highlighted that the vote next week could render a possible decision in favor of Freitas ineffective. The case does not yet have a trial date.
The ethical-disciplinary process
The vote in the plenary was scheduled after approval of the opinion by the Ethics Council of the Legislative Assembly of Paraná (Alep). According to the rules, the deputy loses his mandate if the absolute majority – 28 of the 54 deputies – votes for impeachment.
The case was initiated considering the record of several representations against the deputy, after he was involved in a fight with a valet in the Center of Curitiba, in November 2025. On that occasion, the two exchanged punches and kicks. See the video below.

At the time, Renato Freitas said he defended himself from the attacks he suffered.
Five of the six deputies who form the Ethics Council understood that the revocation of the mandate is a proportional punishment for the breach of parliamentary decorum committed by Renato Freitas. After approval, the deputy classified the process as "another demonstration of systematic political persecution".

Videos recorded the confusion that motivated the Alep case against Freitas. The images show the deputy, in yellow, a friend of his, in blue, and the man, in a black t-shirt, arguing verbally.
Freitas tells the man to move away, but he approaches. The deputy pushes him and the man hits Freitas' face. The fight continues and the video shows the deputy kicking the boy in the leg twice. Then he is punched in the face.
Another video shows the two being separated by people passing by. Renato Freitas broke his nose and was taken to medical care.
The valet involved in the confusion had injuries to his eye area and denied knowing who the deputy was. Both presented different versions of what motivated the fight.
