According to the MP, the city hall must adopt measures to prevent the burning of bonfires, more specifically on the 12th of June, the eve of Saint Anthony, in addition to the 23rd and 24th, the eve and day of Saint John, and the 28th and 29th, the eve and day of Saint Peter.
g1 contacted Campina Grande City Hall, which did not respond until the last update of this report.
The recommendation was sent directly to the Secretariat of Urban Services and the Environment (Sesuma), the Municipal Environmental Coordination (Comea). According to the Public Ministry, both public bodies must adopt the removal and disposal of material, such as firewood, eventually found for the Public Prosecutor's Office, which issued the recommendation.
The Public Ministry also pointed out that a 1997 municipal law, the city's Code of Posture, already prohibits the use of these materials. The prosecutor in the case stated that bonfires are harmful to the environment and, mainly, to the health of the population.
“Pollution caused by fires worsens the respiratory condition of vulnerable groups and, in particular, people with cardiorespiratory diseases or chronic health conditions,” he said.
The prosecutor's office also issued letters to the Military Fire Department, Environmental Police and the Campina Grande Environmental Police Station, with the aim of having these bodies act if necessary and provide support to the inspection to enforce the MPPB's recommendation.
