Indigenous man dies after shipwreck on the Xingu River in Altamira, Pará A small vessel, of the "flying" type, sank with 12 people in the Xingu River, in Altamira, in the southwest of Pará. The search continues this Friday (12). Three indigenous people of the Kayapó ethnic group died in the accident, while three other people are still missing in the waters. The first body located was that of Romário Kayapó, found on Thursday afternoon (11) by firefighters and volunteers at the point known as Rebojo do Avelino, approximately 700 meters from the place where the vessel sank last Wednesday. Two other bodies were found in the morning, also during searches in the region. According to the Brazilian Navy, of the 12 people on the vessel, six were rescued alive, and the other six disappeared in the river. Teams from the Altamira Fire Department have remained at the site since Thursday morning, while indigenous people and riverside residents also help in the search below the wreck area. According to witnesses, the flight was transporting indigenous people from the Kayapó and Xikrin peoples who left the Kararaô Indigenous Land heading to the city. The stretch where the accident occurred is marked by many currents and is considered dangerous for navigation, which increases the difficulty of rescue operations. Still on Wednesday night, residents of neighboring villages searched on their own, but were unable to locate the missing people. The teams remain concentrated in the area and should continue their work throughout the day, in an attempt to find the people who have not yet been located. VIDEOS: see all the news from Pará
