Carlos was admitted in serious condition to a hospital in Estrela d'Oeste (SP). A smoker for many years, he had been diagnosed with pulmonary emphysema, a chronic and progressive respiratory disease in which the alveoli (small air sacs in the lungs) are destroyed.
Despite having no comorbidities and enviable health, Tereza also had to be hospitalized after discovering a urine infection. He then contracted bacterial pneumonia.
Initially treated in Fernandópolis (SP), she was transferred to São José do Rio Preto (SP) to undergo surgery, necessary to contain the infection. She did not survive and died at 12:15 am on May 27th.
The couple's son, João Carlos Garavelo, 56, told g1 that, around 15 minutes after Tereza's death, Carlos' vital signs suddenly worsened. He died at 5pm, about an hour after his wife's burial, which took place at 4pm.
"It was as if he was waiting for her departure to also rest. A few hours later, he also passed away. For us, we have the feeling that their love was so strong that not even death could separate them", comments the son.

❤️ Love at first sight
The story of Tereza and Carlos began more than six decades ago, during a dance held in a coffee drying yard. According to his son, it was love at first sight.
After meeting, the lovers dated in secret for three months, until they decided it was time to get married. Carlos and Tereza exchanged rings on May 15, 1963 in São João das Duas Pontes. The couple left in the same month as the wedding.
"It was love at first sight. They danced together that night, they started dating in secret. Their story was one that seems to have come out of a movie. It was a love built on respect, complicity and dedication", comments the son.
Over the years, they built a family made up of two sons, three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. Carlos worked as a farmhand. Tereza was a merchant. Even though they were retired, they remained active and maintained their work routine.
"Their coexistence was marked by partnership. They were inseparable. They shared joys, challenges and built a family based on love and respect", comments the son.

Two farewells on the same day
For his son, facing two losses in just a few hours was an experience difficult to describe. Despite the sadness, the family finds comfort in the story built by the couple.
"It was an immeasurable pain. In just a few hours, we lost the two pillars of our family practically at the same time. They always made a point of being together. The presence of one was part of the other's life, and this union remained strong throughout the trajectory they built", says João.
The main memory left by Carlos and Tereza, according to family members, is the example of companionship and complicity.
"The main memory is their complicity. They were always together and demonstrated daily how much they loved each other. It was a simple, true and admirable love. They showed all of us the true meaning of building a life together", concludes the son. Tereza and Carlos (on the left) next to their children (on the right)
