A suspected case of the Ebola virus is being investigated in Rio Grande do Sul. According to the State Department of Health (SES), it is a 64-year-old man who was recently in Uganda, Africa.
➡️ According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Ebola is a rare but serious disease in humans, which often leads to death (read more about the symptoms and mode of transmission below).
According to SES, the patient was treated at a health unit in Novo Hamburgo, in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre.

"During the investigation, a rapid test for malaria was carried out, with a positive result for Plasmodium falciparum, and specific treatment was promptly initiated. Although malaria is, to date, the main diagnosis identified, the case remains under investigation for Ebola virus disease", says the SES.

Samples will be sent to the national reference laboratory, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), which will indicate whether the case is Ebola or not.
The ministry also said that the patient will be transferred to the state reference unit, Grupo Hospitalar Conceição, in the capital. "Where you will receive specialized monitoring and samples will be sent for laboratory analysis. If Ebola is confirmed, the patient will be transferred to a national reference hospital."
SES states that it immediately reported the case to the Ministry of Health and highlights that it follows “surveillance, assistance and biosafety” protocols. Authorities are mapping and monitoring people who had contact with the man.
São Paulo also monitors suspicion
A suspected case was ruled out earlier this month in São Paulo and a second is being investigated in the capital of São Paulo. It involves a 31-year-old woman, who is in isolation at the Emílio Ribas Institute of Infectious Diseases, a national reference in the treatment of infectious diseases.
In 2014, Ebola was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, and the disease reached São Paulo. However, no cases of autochthonous (i.e. native) transmission of the virus have been recorded in South America.
According to the WHO, there is an outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The WHO declared an Ebola outbreak in both countries. The Democratic Republic of Congo reported on Monday (8) that the number of deaths caused by the Ebola outbreak exceeded 100 victims.
What is Ebola and what are the symptoms
Ebola is a serious hemorrhagic fever that can affect several organs. Transmission occurs through contact with bodily fluids - such as blood, urine and feces - and not through the air, which makes it less contagious than respiratory diseases such as Covid-19.
Among the main symptoms are:
High fever
Headache
Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhea
Bleeding (in the most serious cases)
