The Gulf monarchies have become some of the most influential actors on the international stage. Thanks to their energy wealth, their global investments and a growing strategy of international projection, countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have expanded their political, economic and diplomatic weight far beyond the Middle East. However, behind the megaprojects, sporting events and the image of modernization, a model of power persists based on the almost absolute control of a few ruling families.
