A part of the historic building Solar dos Motta, built in the 19th century in the center of Maranguape, collapsed in the early hours of this Thursday (11). Nobody was injured. The city hall of the municipality of the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza reiterated to the owners that no intervention can be carried out on the site. Those responsible for the building declined to comment. The building was listed by municipal law in 2003 due to its relevant historical and cultural value. However, the owners managed to have the building demolished in court. "Even without the proper authorization, the owners began removing the tiles from the property. Faced with the irregularity, the city hall notified those responsible and immediately embargoed the work", highlighted a note issued by the City of Maranguape. Reports of interventions According to the municipal manager, inspectors were making visits almost daily to investigate reports of interventions in the building. The city hall's position is that the structure of the building did not present an imminent risk of collapse, according to recent technical reports. Therefore, this morning, the news of the collapse "surprised" the municipal management. Technicians were sent to the site to isolate the area and ensure the safety of the building's surroundings early this Thursday morning. Professionals also prepare a new technical report with evaluation after the partial collapse. The city hall claims to be notifying the owners so that they can first cease any further intervention, reiterating the embargo. Secondly, the representatives must present reasons for the building's collapse. "The municipality reaffirms its commitment to the preservation of historical and cultural heritage, to the safety of its inhabitants and to the rigorous investigation of the facts", they point out in a released statement. Solar dos Motta has already had multiple uses. It was once the headquarters of the municipal guard and housed commercial offices.
