The number of hospitalizations for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) increased in Brazil and, in some regions of the country, there were also more hospitalizations for flu caused by influenza A and B viruses. The data is in Infogripe, from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), released this Thursday (11). The analysis refers to Epidemiological Week 22, the period from May 31 to June 6, a period in which the drop in temperatures can boost the spread of respiratory viruses in closed and crowded places. The study found that 11 of the 27 federative units have an incidence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) at an alert, risk or high risk level in the last two weeks, with signs of growth also in the long-term trend, which considers the last six weeks. They are: Acre, Alagoas, Amapá, Paraná, Pará, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Roraima, Santa Catarina, Sergipe and São Paulo. The InfoGripe also highlights that the remaining 16 units of the Federation show signs of interruption in the growth or decline in the number of SARS cases in the long-term trend. But 12 of them still register incidence at alert, risk or high risk levels: Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Distrito Federal, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraíba and Rio de Janeiro. Care In 2026, 3,591 deaths from SARS have already been recorded. For researcher Tatiana Portella, from the InfoGripe Bulletin and the Fiocruz Scientific Computing Program, it is important for the population to take some precautions, such as always washing their hands, wearing masks in health units and in crowded environments with little air circulation. According to her, it is also important to isolate in case of flu or cold symptoms, to avoid transmitting the virus to other people. If isolation is not possible, the recommendation is that the person leaves the house wearing a good mask such as N95 or PFF2 “And most importantly: it is essential that people in priority and eligible groups take the vaccine against influenza and RSV, to reduce the chances of developing the most serious form of the disease or dying, if they become infected with these viruses”, says Tatiana. Data on laboratory results by age group show that the increase in SARS in children up to 4 years of age has been driven mainly by RSV, while rhinovirus has predominated among children and adolescents aged 5 to 14 years. In recent weeks, a predominance of SARS cases associated with influenza A has also been observed among young people, adults and the elderly. Influenza B has been increasing, especially in the age groups of 5 to 14 years and 15 to 49 years.
