The Public Ministry of the State of São Paulo (MP-SP) criminally charged a lawyer who was caught allegedly abandoning a dog on a street in the Chácara da Barra neighborhood, in Campinas (SP), in April 2026.
The suspect must face a section of the Environmental Crimes Law that provides for a sentence of two to five years in prison, a fine and a ban on custody in cases of mistreatment of domestic animals.
However, the complaint still needs to be analyzed by the Campinas Court. There is no deadline for this to happen. If accepted, the lawyer will become a defendant in the action.

In a note, the suspect's defense said that it is aware of the statement presented by the MP and informed that the procedure is pending distribution to the competent court, and that, to date, there has been no analysis of the ministerial claim.
"Out of respect for due legal process, the adversarial process and broad defense, the pertinent clarifications and elements will be presented in a timely manner before the Judiciary, at the appropriate procedural time, contributing to the correct understanding of the case", he continued.
Finally, the defense stated that the person involved has been subjected to "significant public and media exposure based on unilateral versions of events" and criticized the disproportionate exposure and premature media condemnation, which would have an impact on the suspect's personal life.

Civil police officers from the Special Operations Group (GOE) caught the abandonment and recorded part of the action on video. According to the team, the small dog was left next to the vehicle, without any guide or monitoring, and started to walk around the street alone.
According to the Civil Police, upon realizing that the vehicle was moving away and noticing that it was abandoned, the agents approached the lawyer and charged the vehicle.
Minutes later, according to the police, the dog returned to meet the woman, which, according to them, confirmed the link between the suspect and the animal.
g1 had access to the incident report. It states that the lawyer told the agents that she was going through a separation process and was “disturbed”.
The dog named Calvin, aged 11, was seized and sent for veterinary evaluation. He was later handed over to the care of the NGO Operação Resgate.
The woman was arrested and taken to the Women's Public Prison of Paulínia (SP). Subsequently, the Court granted her provisional freedom, with the imposition of precautionary measures.
Report
According to prosecutor Verônica Morais Ramos Kobori, the lawyer committed "an act of abuse against a domestic animal, consisting of abandoning a dog she owned on public roads."
Still according to the complaint, dated May 25, 2026, the dog was left by the suspect on a public street "without any containment or monitoring, at which time the vehicle moved away from the location, leaving the animal alone and apparently disoriented, exposed to a risk and vulnerability situation".
The lawyer must respond to an article in the Environmental Crimes Law that provides for a sentence of two to five years in prison, a fine and a ban on custody in cases of mistreatment of domestic animals.
Because the sentence exceeds two years, the hypotheses of criminal settlement (when the person agrees to serve an early sentence of fine or restriction of rights in exchange for the dismissal of the case) and non-criminal prosecution agreement (acknowledgment of guilt and compliance with measures) were ruled out. The lawyer's defense even asked that the ex-husband or a "third party technically appointed by the judge" keep the dog until the case was judged. The request was denied, so Calvin continues as the NGO's faithful custodian.
🔎 The custodian is the natural or legal person appointed by the Court or by law to guard, conserve and protect an asset involved in a process (such as in cases of attachment, execution or seizure). He is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the assets until the final decision of the case.
However, ownership of the dog, both temporary and permanent, has been discussed in another process between the NGO and the suspect. In it, the MP spoke in favor of the dog remaining under the responsibility of the animal rescue entity. There is still no decision from the Court.
