During the 7th Plenary Meeting of the Council for Sustainable Economic and Social Development, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva compared the protests in Mexico to the demonstrations that took place in Brazil in 2013. He informed that he has a conference call scheduled with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum this Wednesday afternoon (10).  According to the president, in 2013, the demonstrations demanding an increase in bus fares were used by the far right, which led to the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff.   Related news: Mexico accuses US sectors of interference in internal affairs. “The extreme right took advantage and impeached Dilma [ex-president Dilma Rousseff, em 2016]. You know the result and they even elected president of the Republic,” he said. Lula suggested that the Mexican situation may have external influences. “I think there’s someone’s finger on it and maybe it’s not even Mexican.” Mexico faces a series of protests on the eve of the opening of the World Cup, a competition that the country, together with the United States and Canada, will host.  The demonstrations are led by teachers, who are putting pressure on the government for salary increases. In the last few hours, roads were blocked and there were clashes with security forces in the Mexican capital, increasing tension.  Fake news At the meeting, President Lula criticized the speed at which fake news is disseminated, to the detriment of public debate.  "We are living in a very delicate moment in politics and humanity. The narrative and the argument are no longer worth anything. What counts is the speed of the lie on digital networks, both on the right and on the left. It is a dispute about the shorter the better. And the less explained, the better." "The world will only be civilized when we once again take into account what the argument is, it is the narrative of things that can convince the seriousness of someone running for office anywhere. And we are not living in this moment", he added.
