Care for the trans population: HU outpatient clinic offers specialized health care Trans people now have a specialized outpatient clinic at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Piauí (HU-UFPI), in Teresina. The service began operating in January and is aimed at monitoring the health of this population in the public network. The service takes place in the endocrinology area, responsible for monitoring hormonal therapy. In an interview with TV Clube, the HU-UFPI endocrinologist, Carmen Laís Gervásio, informed that, to access the outpatient clinic, it is necessary to be referred by a Basic Health Unit (UBS). ✅ Follow the g1 Piauí channel on WhatsApp "The patient looks for the clinic in their region, gets the referral that goes to the regulation so that they can be sent to our outpatient clinic", he said. The endocrinologist explained that, in addition to hormonal prescriptions, the clinic also carries out referrals for breast implants and procedures such as removal of the uterus or other structures that do not match the gender with which the patient identifies. The outpatient clinic also offers support for mental well-being, with psychology and psychiatry services. “We make all relevant referrals,” said Carmen. The endocrinologist also highlighted that the service is not exclusive to the use of hormones, but also covers other comorbidities, such as diabetes and thyroid problems. "Sometimes doctors in other areas are unsure. For example, a trans woman who uses estrogen and is going to have surgery: does she need to stop using it? Not always. So, that's the type of guidance we also give," he explained.
