Ceará had a 48.7% reduction in the number of murders in May 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to data released this Wednesday (10) by the Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense (SSPDS). In Fortaleza, the reduction in the number of murders reached 70%.
In May this year, the state of Ceará recorded 137 Intentional Lethal Violent Crimes (CVLI) - which includes crimes of homicide, feminicide, bodily injury followed by death and robbery. In May 2025, there were 267 violent deaths.

The reduction was even greater in Fortaleza. In May this year, the capital of Ceará recorded 21 homicides, while in May 2025 there were 58 crimes - a drop of 70.8%.
In the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza there was also a reduction: 13 deaths in May 2026 compared to 79 in the same period last year, a drop of 83.5%.
The interior of the state - which includes all regions with the exception of Fortaleza and the Metropolitan Region - also saw a drop in homicides: from 116 deaths in May 2025 to 103 cases in May this year, a drop of 11.2%.

With the result from May, Ceará accumulates a total of 722 homicides in 2026. Between January and May 2025, there were 1198 murders. When comparing the two periods, in the year to date the reduction in the number of crimes against life is 39.7%.
In Fortaleza, there was a 62.9% reduction in murders in the first five months, compared to the same period last year. There were 125 registrations in 2026, while the same period in 2025 had 337 CVLIs.
The May 2026 balance consolidates a downward trend in recent months. The month of April was considered the least violent in Ceará's historical series, which began in 2009. In April, Fortaleza had 17 homicides, the lowest number ever recorded. Also in 2026, the month of March had already shown the greatest reduction in the number of violent deaths.

Crimes against property
In May, Ceará also recorded a decrease in Violent Crimes against Property (CVP), which include robberies in general - with the exception of robberies (robberies followed by death).
Compared to the same month in 2025, May this year saw a 60.3% drop in occurrences. There were 1,038 records this year, while the same month in 2025 recorded 2,615 cases.
The most significant reduction was recorded in Fortaleza, with a decrease of 62.9% of cases. There were 679 cases in May 2026, compared to 1,832 in May 2025.
