World Oceans Day will be celebrated this Monday (8) with the seminar "Fernando de Noronha: the Oceanic Community of Brazil". The event will be held from 3pm, at Escola Arquipélago, and is promoted on the island by the Dolphin Rotador Project.
The program is aimed at students, representatives of civil society and institutions that work in environmental conservation and sustainable development in Noronha.

According to the organizers, the objective is to strengthen the partnership between the Rotador Golf Project, the local community and public bodies that operate on the island.
The seminar will promote debates on ocean preservation and the challenges of reconciling environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Ocean community
One of the themes of the meeting will be the recognition of the traditional community of Fernando de Noronha. Although this condition has not yet been officially recognized by the Brazilian State, residents of the island continue to mobilize in search of legal guarantees similar to those granted to other traditional communities in the country.
Residents and institutions maintain links with the Government of Pernambuco and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) to advance the recognition of the rights of the island's traditional population.
Throughout history, Fernando de Noronha has gone through different cycles of human occupation, with changes in the island's population and cultural diversity.
Since its discovery in 1503, the archipelago has gone through periods of low occupation and foreign presence. The Portuguese occupation was only consolidated in 1737.

Created in 1990, the Rotator Dolphin Project develops research and conservation actions for dolphins in Fernando de Noronha (see video above). The work is supported by the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program.
The organization also promotes cultural workshops, encourages surfing among young people and carries out educational activities in schools on the island.
Importance of the oceans
World Oceans Day was made official by the United Nations (UN) in 2008. The proposal, however, emerged in 1992, during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro.
The oceans cover approximately 71% of the Earth's surface and contain approximately 97% of all water on the planet.
With around 361 million square kilometers, the oceans play a fundamental role in regulating the global climate. They influence weather patterns, the water cycle and the carbon cycle, in addition to functioning as one of the largest heat reservoirs on the planet.
The oceans are essential for climate regulation, food production, conservation of marine biodiversity and economic activities linked to tourism.
In Fernando de Noronha, tourism is the main economic activity and is directly linked to the conservation of marine environments. The activity reinforces the historical, cultural and economic relationship between the local population and the ocean.
