Located in the Historic Center of the city of Vassouras, in the Vale do Café region, the Vassouras Museum has its history beginning in 1848. The Museum's headquarters is the building of the former Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Santa Casa da Misericórdia), which was the first hospital in the city.
In 1910, the building became the Barão Amparo asylum, and remained that way for decades. Its change took place in 1986, when the property was listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN). In 2007, the mansion was closed by the State Public Ministry, due to the precarious conditions and risk of the property collapsing.
The last change was between 2019 and 2025, when the property was restored by the Vassouras Cultural Institute.
