The United States plans to reduce its military contribution to NATO to concentrate on other strategic scenarios. Faced with that possibility, and even an eventual departure of Washington from the alliance, European leaders would be beginning to evaluate alternatives to strengthen their own defense and reduce a historical dependence on American protection.
