Seven children, aged between 10 months and 11 years, remain in the care of the Guardianship Council after being found abandoned in a house in Sapezal, 473 km from Cuiabá, on June 4th. The parents, a 32-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, were arrested for abandonment of an incapacitated person, but were released after a custody hearing. According to information provided to authorities, the two are undergoing treatment for alcoholism.
The children include three boys, aged 10 months, 5 and 11 years, and four girls, aged 2, 4, 7 and 9 years.
The case was discovered after a complaint received by the Guardianship Council, which called the Military Police to check the situation at a residence in the municipality.

According to the Military Police, six of the children were found alone inside the house. The property was in precarious conditions, with a strong smell of urine, the presence of cockroaches, spoiled food and a lack of food in the refrigerator. According to the police, the children reported that they had been without a guardian present since noon. The complaint reached the authorities around 10:20 pm.
While the Guardianship Council was welcoming the minors, the parents arrived at the scene. According to the Military Police, the two showed signs of drunkenness, a situation confirmed by the breathalyzer test. The couple was arrested in the act and taken to the Civil Police for abandonment of an incapacitated person.
During the incident, teams discovered that there was a seventh child in the family. She was later located at another residence.
The seven children remain under the protection of the Guardianship Council, which monitors the case and evaluates the appropriate protection measures.
