Alagoas recorded 4,400 cases of yellow scorpion stings between January and April this year, equivalent to an average of almost 20 accidents per day. The data comes from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (Sinan), of the Ministry of Health. Despite the high number of occurrences, there were no deaths recorded in the state.
According to the State Department of Health (Sesau), Brazil has seen a 359% increase in accidents involving scorpions in recent years. In Alagoas, Maceió concentrates the largest number of notifications, followed by Arapiraca and São Miguel dos Campos.
According to Sesau's technical advisor, Clarício Bulgarim, simple measures can help reduce cases.
"We know that scorpions feed on cockroaches. Therefore, proper cleaning of homes, backyards and grease traps, in addition to inspecting clothes and shoes before use, are fundamental measures to curb the growth in the number of accidents", he advised.
