PF arrests couple for falsifying release permits in Rio; Arms trafficker is among those benefiting

The Federal Police arrested, this Tuesday (16), a couple suspected of falsifying public documents. According to investigations, the duo would use false release permits to improperly release prisoners held in prison units in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
The warrants were issued by the 10th Federal Criminal Court of Rio de Janeiro.
Arlésio Luiz Pereira Santos and Josefa Antonio da Silva were arrested by police officers from the Drug Enforcement Station (DRE), the Capture Unit (NUCAP/DREX) and the Federal Police Station in Macaé (DPF/MCE), in Itaboraí, in the Metropolitan Region of RJ.
The couple will be charged with criminal association and falsification of a public document.

Among those benefiting from the scheme is Frederik Barbieri, one of the country's biggest arms traffickers, sentenced to 27 years in prison, but who was released based on false court documents.

In June 2017, a shipment of 30 AR-15 rifles and 30 AK-47 rifles, hidden in four pool heaters, was intercepted at Galeão airport, in the North Zone of Rio.
In February 2018, federal agents executed a search warrant at a warehouse rented by Barbieri in Vero Beach, Florida. There, security forces found 52 rifles, 49 already prepared to be sent to other countries with scratched numbers. 2,000 pieces of ammunition and packaging material were also found. Barbieri was arrested the following day.
When approached this Tuesday, in Itaboraí, the couple presented identification documents with signs of forgery to the police.
The prisoners were sent to the Rio de Janeiro prison system, where they will remain at the disposal of the courts.
