The Alerta Rio historical series, started in 1997, also points out that the rain at the beginning of this week was the third most intense ever observed by the Rocinha rain gauge in 24 hours.
Another five neighborhoods in the south zone received significant amounts of rain in the last few hours. The most affected in the region were Jardim Botânico, Laranjeiras, Vidigal, Urca and Copacabana.
Sirens
According to the Municipal Civil Defense, at 2:07 pm this Tuesday, the seven sirens installed in Rocinha were activated again due to the high geological risk, after the rain gauges recorded an accumulated 188.2 mm of rain in 24 hours.
The first activation of the Alert and Alarm System was recorded between 7:17 am and 11:40 am. The continuous volume of rain in the city causes the soil to become waterlogged and increases the risk of slopes sliding.
Pipe burst
The Operations and Resilience Center (COR-Rio) monitors the work of Rio City Hall teams on Estrada da Gávea, in Rocinha, near Rua Portão Vermelho, after the rupture of a pipe at the Águas do Rio concessionaire.
The leak caused a landslide last night. The road, which was completely closed, has one lane occupied for the work of Civil Defense teams and the Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb). There were no victims.
The Geo-Rio Foundation will carry out a survey of the services needed to begin containment work, with the implementation of a drainage system, and Comlurb removed 70 tons of earth from the slope, with the support of 15 trucks, three loaders and 50 street cleaners.
In the community of Salgueiro, in Tijuca, in the north of the city, a landslide was also recorded on Rua São Sebastião. No properties were affected and there were no road closures.
Recommendations
Rio's city hall recommends that the population not travel to the regions most affected by the rain. See other guidelines:
Avoid areas subject to flooding and/or landslides;
Do not force vehicles to pass through flooded areas;
In cases of strong winds and/or rain with electrical discharges, avoid being close to trees or in open areas;
Check your home for signs of cracks. If you notice cracks or damage to the structure, call Civil Defense by calling 199 and avoid staying at home;
Residents of risk areas need to pay attention to sound alerts. The activation of the sirens indicates a danger of landslides and people must move to the support points established by the municipal Civil Defense;
