Who was Father Euclides
Born in Minas Gerais, Euclides arrived in Ribeirão Preto in 1902, when he was appointed to work as an assistant at the São Sebastião Parish. Later, he participated in the work related to the construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral.
The priest's actions, however, went beyond the limits of the Church. In 1904, he acquired land on Rua Visconde de Inhaúma, where he founded the Sociedade Legião Brasileira. In the space, he promoted catechesis activities, cultural meetings and artistic presentations.

It was also at that address that a library was born that would become a cultural reference in Ribeirão Preto. The space quickly established itself as a cultural spot, hosting lectures, literary meetings and prominent personalities of national culture, including the writer Monteiro Lobato.
Over the decades, the building also served as a landmark in the city. In 1909, it served as a shelter for residents during a heavy hailstorm. During the revolutions of 1924 and 1930, it functioned as an improvised hospital to treat the wounded. During the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932, it was used as the headquarters of São Paulo troops.
With the transformations in the city center, the old building was replaced by a new building. Despite the changes, the Padre Euclides Library remained in operation on the first floor of the building located on Rua Visconde de Inhaúma and continues to this day.

Conflict with the Diocese
In addition to his contribution to culture, Father Euclides played an important role in the reorganization of Santa Casa de Ribeirão Preto and created initiatives aimed at the city's workers.
His best-known social work was the founding of an asylum designed to accommodate the elderly and people considered disabled: the Asylo dos Inválidos, which later became Lar Padre Euclides.
The construction of the institution generated disagreements with the Diocese of Ribeirão Preto. According to historian Nainôra Maria Barbosa de Freitas, author of the thesis The Creation of the Diocese of Ribeirão Preto and the Government of the First Bishop, the episode ended up resulting in the priest's transfer to São José do Rio Pardo, in 1914.

Even though he was far away, Euclides maintained ties with Ribeirão Preto. He frequently returned to the city to raise funds for charitable works and monitor the projects he had created, until his death in 1945, at the age of 65.
