The earthquake was centered in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, and a maximum seismic intensity of lower 5 was observed in Gunma and Saitama prefectures. This is the first time that a magnitude 5 quake was observed in Saitama Prefecture since the magnitude 5.3 earthquake that occurred in March of last year, with its epicenter in southern Ibaraki Prefecture. This is the first time that a magnitude 5 quake was observed in Gunma Prefecture since June 2018, when a magnitude 4.6 earthquake occurred in the southern part of Gunma Prefecture.
