Indigenous leader Raoni Metuktire, 94 years old, was admitted again, this Sunday afternoon (14), at Hospital e Maternidade Dois Pinheiros, in Sinop, Mato Grosso. Raoni is in the ICU and his health condition is considered serious. According to the hospital's medical report, upon entering the unit, the indigenous leader had signs of dehydration, severe drowsiness, distended abdomen and lack of diuresis, a condition that occurs when the kidneys are not filtering the blood. The main diagnostic hypothesis is pulmonary sepsis secondary to bronchoaspiration pneumonia, resulting from incoercible vomiting. The text also says that, according to information provided by family members and caregivers, the chief was at his home, in the region of Peixoto de Azevedo (MT), where he received visits from leaders and shamans of his people, when he experienced an episode of vomiting on Saturday morning (13). "On Sunday (14), he presented three new episodes of vomiting, associated with a persistent cough, abdominal pain and expectoration with a small amount of blood. The patient only ate breakfast and did not eat any more throughout the day, due to abdominal discomfort and the evolution of his clinical condition", says the hospital. >> Follow the Agência Brasil channel on WhatsApp The chief had already been hospitalized in mid-May, after experiencing severe abdominal pain, caused by a chronic traumatic diaphragmatic hernia, the result of an accident suffered more than 20 years ago. Due to his age, doctors ruled out surgery and opted for conservative treatment. After his last discharge, doctors recommended that he continue treatment at home where he should be monitored daily, with caregivers, in addition to undergoing respiratory physiotherapy, nutritional monitoring and permanent care due to his age. Another recommendation is to restrict contact with people with infectious diseases and not take long trips. In 2022, Raoni had surgery to install a pacemaker and has already had to cancel events due to health problems. In 2020, he was hospitalized twice, once after contracting Covid-19. Cacique Raoni is one of the world's main indigenous leaders, due to his fight against deforestation in the Amazon and denouncing the impacts of deforestation on indigenous peoples.
