With low temperatures all year round, the cold is part of the residents' routine, who in the colder months are accompanied by tourists from Brazil and abroad. Owner of a chalet in the city, Ivanir Espíndola, 65 years old, has experienced both situations: from being a visitor, he started living in Urupema for more than a decade. She also says that on the coldest days the routine of going out, going to the gym and going to the grocery store remains the same, just with a lot more clothes. Life is bucolic most of the year, waiting for tourists to arrive in winter. What it's like to live in Urupema, the National Capital of Cold What brought me here was precisely the cold and the quality of life. 'Down there' the heat is intense. There are no mosquitoes, termites or ants in the sweets here," said Ivanir, who lives with her husband Edson. In the house where he lives, the walls are covered with thermal wool blankets and the wood stove controls the kitchen and the gas model is barely used throughout the year. Even the meal routine is different. Why is Urupema so cold? In addition to the altitude being higher than its neighbors in the Serra, the city's geography contributes to the phenomena that justify the title of National Cold Capital. The city's urban area, almost 90%, is in a depression surrounded by hills and on colder nights, the cold air, which is heavier, descends and accumulates at the bottom of the valley. Even higher than the city's average altitude, is Morro das Antenas, the highest in Urupema, and one of the points with the greatest concentration of tourists and residents for the "total cold experience" due to the successive wind currents. The hill is eight kilometers from the Center and can be accessed by vehicle. The name is due to the existence of telephone and television antennas and it usually records the lowest temperatures in the city, including snowfall.
