Soldier dies after falling ill during swimming instruction A soldier, identified as Rafael Souto de Lima, aged 19, died after falling ill during a swimming session at the Special Operations Command (CopEsp), in Goiânia. To g1, a friend of the victim, who did not want to be identified, stated that family members received news about the accident hours after the fact and that the young man was taken to the Governor Otávio Lage de Siqueira de Goiás Emergency Hospital (Hugol), but he did not survive and died. g1 tried to contact CopEsp and the Army this Sunday afternoon (14) to find out if the family received support and if the case is being investigated, but did not receive a response until the last update of this report. The case happened on Friday (12), and the young man's death was confirmed on Saturday (13). According to the victim's friend, Rafael was underwater for several minutes during the instruction without being rescued. She highlighted that it was only at 3pm that family members were informed about the incident. Still according to her, Rafael was taken to the hospital in serious condition and, on the same night, the medical team suspected that the young man was brain dead. The official cause of death was not released. She highlighted that, at first, his girlfriend and family were against the decision, but decided to support the young man because it was his dream to join the Armed Forces. She highlighted that the family is shaken by the loss and that Rafael's wake should take place after 6pm this Sunday (14), but the location had not yet been confirmed until the last update of this report.
