Sapucaia do Sul Zoo Disclosure On May 15th, visits to the Sapucaia do Sul Zoo, in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, were suspended. The closure came after the deaths of swans. Almost a month later, the Secretariat for the Environment and Infrastructure (Sema) announced the reopening this Saturday (13). The decision was taken after 15 days with no record of bird deaths and based on technical and laboratory assessments that attested to the health safety of the site for visitors. 📲 Access the g1 RS channel on WhatsApp The first case was registered on May 13th. On Tuesday (9), the conclusive diagnosis indicated botulism, an illness caused by the toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. According to technical teams, botulism does not pose a risk of transmission to visitors, as it is not a contagious disease through contact with animals or environments. In humans, poisoning is mainly associated with the ingestion of contaminated or poorly preserved food. "All protocols were followed to ensure a safe environment for both visitors and animals. Since the bird flu episode last year, we have adopted proactive surveillance, with permanent attention to the health of animals", says the Secretary of Environment and Infrastructure, Marjorie Kauffmann. Last year, the Sapucaia Zoo was closed due to an outbreak of bird flu and only reopened two months later, in July. The virus caused the death of 168 wild birds of 11 species.
