Surprises in the final stretch of the cycle are in the history of Brazil in World Cups
⚡ Quick Summary
Reaching the last year of a World Cup cycle with few opportunities or even without being called up to the Brazilian team does not mean the end of the dream.
Reaching the last year of a World Cup cycle with few opportunities or even without being called up to the Brazilian team does not mean the end of the dream. Proof of this is that eight of the 26 called up by coach Carlo Ancelotti for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada have less than ten games with Amarelinha. And four debuted in 2026 alone.
Defender Léo Pereira, midfielder Danilo Santos and attackers Rayan and Igor Thiago took to the field wearing the Brazilian shirt for the first time in friendlies against France and Croatia, in March this year. It was enough to convince Ancelotti. Of them, only Danilo Santos had previously been called up in June 2022, but he didn't even play in the games with Japan and South Korea, which preceded the World Cup in Qatar, under Tite's command.

Full-back Douglas Santos, who has played seven games for Brazil and competes for the starting position on the left side of the defense with Alex Sandro, debuted for the senior team in 2016, at the Copa América, with Tite, after being Olympic champion in Rio de Janeiro. It took nine years to wait until he received another chance, now with Ancelotti, and firmly established himself in the team in 2026.
Defenders Bremer and Ibañez arrived together in the Brazilian team, in September 2022, for friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia, also under Tite's command. The first was the Qatar Cup, even with just one game for Amarelinha. Absent for much of the current cycle, they regained their place in the group after friendlies with France and Croatia. Bremer has played eight games for Brazil, one more than Ibañez.

Called up to replace injured full-back Wesley, midfielder Éderson was called up after just three games for the green and yellow team - none under Ancelotti's command, despite being watched by the Italian. His last match was the 4-1 defeat to Argentina, away from home, in the World Cup qualifiers, which culminated in the dismissal of coach Dorival Júnior.
Since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Brazil has not had so many players with ten or fewer games for the main team. At the time, ten of the 22 names called by Telê Santana met the statistics. In fact, two of them had not even debuted with Amarelinha: full-back Josimar and midfielder Valdo.
Something that would happen again in 1998, in France. The group had only three players with ten or fewer games for Brazil among the 23 called up: goalkeeper Carlos Germano, midfielder Emerson - called up to replace striker Romário, cut by injury - and full-back Zé Carlos. The latter, who had never played for the Brazilian team, made his debut in the World Cup semi-final, against the Netherlands, as starter Cafu was suspended.
In 1994 and 2002, editions in which Brazil emerged champion, the number of athletes with a maximum of ten matches for the national team was similar to that of 2026. In the penta team, players with little experience with Amarelinha, such as midfielders Gilberto Silva (six matches) and Kleberson (five), gained the starting position and were important in the title.
